Israeli strikes kill 17 after soldier wounded

Published on: February 4, 2026 4:10 PM

At least 17 Palestinians were killed in Israeli air and ground strikes in Gaza, hospitals reported. The strikes followed an attack by gunmen who wounded an Israeli soldier near the Yellow Line. The military said the operation targeted those violating a three-month-old ceasefire with Hamas.

Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City received 13 bodies, including five children, after strikes hit tents and homes in Zeitoun and Tuffah neighborhoods. Nasser hospital in Khan Younis reported four dead, including one child, from attacks on tents in Qizan Rashwan. Hospital officials confirmed the victims included several children.

Israel stated its armored units and aircraft conducted precise strikes in response to the soldier’s wounding. Both Israel and Hamas have accused each other of near-daily ceasefire violations since October 10, 2025. The military described the action as retaliation against a “blatant violation” of the truce.

The ongoing conflict dates back to October 7, 2023, when Hamas attacked southern Israel, killing about 1,200 people and taking 251 hostages. Israel responded with a military campaign in Gaza, in which over 71,800 Palestinians have been killed according to Gaza’s health ministry.

Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry said 529 Palestinians have died from Israeli fire since the ceasefire began. Israel, meanwhile, reports that four of its soldiers have been killed in Palestinian attacks. Tensions continue to rise as both sides accuse each other of violating the fragile truce.
