Amazon, a newcomer to the investor group, is reportedly negotiating a stake potentially well above $20 billion, according to a report from The Information cited by Reuters. The investment could also include expanded agreements for OpenAI to rent cloud servers from Amazon and sell enterprise ChatGPT subscriptions through its platform.
The three companies are said to be preparing a term sheet, representing formal investment commitments, signaling a major scaling opportunity for OpenAI as it competes with Alphabet’s Google in AI development.
Separately, SoftBank Group is reportedly considering a further $30 billion investment in OpenAI, reflecting heightened investor interest in the company’s growth prospects.
OpenAI faces rising costs associated with training and operating its large AI models, and these investments could bolster its financial position, accelerate product development, and strengthen its market position. Analysts suggest that with backing from some of the world’s largest tech companies, OpenAI could further expand capabilities across AI research, enterprise applications, and consumer products.
