Historic Russia–Ukraine–US talks begin in Abu Dhabi

Published on: January 23, 2026 4:30 PM

For the first time, officials from Russia, Ukraine, and the United States will meet for trilateral negotiations on Friday and Saturday. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the talks in Abu Dhabi will finalize security guarantees for Ukraine and discuss post-war economic recovery plans.

The meeting follows Zelensky’s discussions with US President Donald Trump at the World Economic Forum in Davos, marking a historic step in conflict resolution efforts.

Zelensky described the upcoming talks as a positive development, noting that Kyiv’s proposals on security and economic reconstruction are nearly finalized.

While the trilateral meeting is being called the first official session of its kind, Russia has not yet commented on the proposed negotiations. Trump called his Davos meeting with Zelensky constructive, but emphasized that efforts to end the war remain ongoing.

Earlier, US envoy Steve Wittkoff stated that lengthy Russia–Ukraine discussions had already made significant progress, with only one major issue remaining unresolved. Wittkoff and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner later traveled to Moscow to hold talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin before joining the delegation in Abu Dhabi.

In Abu Dhabi, military-level working groups will participate in detailed negotiations, focusing on implementing the security and reconstruction agreements under discussion. Zelensky highlighted that all three countries’ officials will sit at the same table for the first time, a move seen as a historic and symbolic step toward resolving the conflict.

The talks are expected to set the framework for long-term cooperation on Ukraine’s post-war rebuilding and security assurances, with observers noting the potential for a breakthrough in diplomatic relations between the three nations.
