After EV scooties, Sindh plans to launch EV taxis now

Published on: January 21, 2026 4:32 AM

Sindh Senior Minister and Provincial Minister for Information, Transport, and Mass Transit Sharjeel Inam Memon has said that the Sindh government introduced electric buses for the first time in Pakistan’s history, particularly in the province of Sindh and especially in the city of Karachi. This vision belongs to the leadership of the Pakistan Peoples Party and the Government of Sindh. After us, the Punjab government also launched EV buses. We did not stop at EV buses alone; we also introduced EV scooties and are now planning to launch EV taxis.

Speaking in the Sindh Assembly, he said that he has consistently supported EV vehicles in the cabinet. He added that it is important to understand how much governments spend on petrol and to formulate a strategy that enables fuel savings.

He further said that government offices also incur significant expenses on generators, which is why the Sindh government has solarized hospitals and schools.

He stated that 5,000 buses is a very large number and that it will take time to procure such a quantity because these buses are based on modern technology, are expensive, and require supporting infrastructure.

Sharjeel Inam Memon said that the transporters’ strike occurred due to various reasons. Over the past few days, incidents took place that resulted in road closures. There were also incidents of setting fire to heavy traffic in Karachi. Transporters staged protests over certain demands related to the federal government. However, the Sindh government and the federal government jointly listened to the transporters’ concerns and resolved their issues.

Sindh Sports Policy to be announced soon

The Sindh Assembly was informed that the province’s long-awaited Sports Policy will be announced shortly. During the question-and-answer session, Minister for Sports and Youth Affairs Sardar Muhammad Bux Khan Mahar said the policy, missing for years, will prioritise women’s articipation and expand sporting activities to the taluka and district levels.

He noted that various events have already been held across Sindh and that new grounds will be built, despite budget constraints, with plans for a world-class, multi-sport facility in Karachi.

Mahar also highlighted recent achievements, including the 35th National Games, opened by PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and closed by Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir. He briefed members on ongoing youth and sports initiatives.
