EPA cracks down: 41 units demolished for smog

Published on: January 17, 2026 6:45 PM

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) told the Lahore High Court it demolished 41 industrial units and nine brick kilns to curb smog. The agency also sealed 127 units and filed cases against 109 violators for environmental breaches. Officials said fines totaling Rs171 million were imposed on polluters.

According to the EPA report, 81 industrial units, 41 restaurants, and five brick kilns were sealed for violating environmental standards. Cases were registered against 39 industrial units and 70 brick kiln owners. These actions follow strict court orders issued to control pollution in Punjab.

The EPA’s report highlighted efforts to reduce smog across major cities. Measures included anti-smog guns, crackdowns on smoke-emitting vehicles, and bans on tree cutting. Authorities said these initiatives aim to protect public health and improve air quality during winter months.

Punjab faced a severe smog crisis in 2025, affecting over 20 million residents. Lahore saw 600,000 cases requiring medical treatment, while Faisalabad, Multan, Rawalpindi, and Gujranwala reported more than 1.8 million cases combined. Experts linked the spike in illnesses to prolonged exposure to hazardous air.
