In Bangladesh’s capital Dhaka, student leader Usman Hadi’s political platform, Revolution Moncha, blocked Shahbagh in protest over his murder. The sit-in follows a march from Dhaka University’s central mosque.
After Friday prayers, leaders and activists from Revolution Moncha and July Moncha led students and citizens in a procession that turned into a sit-in at Shahbagh. Media reports say traffic in the area is completely halted due to the ongoing protest.
Abdullah Al-Jaber, member secretary of Revolution Moncha, announced the sit-in will continue until the killers are brought to justice. He said protesters are ready to stay overnight if needed and that people from across the country will join by morning. The group also warned of a nationwide shutdown if the government fails to act.
The protesters called on all political parties to unite in pursuing justice for Usman Hadi. They reiterated their three main demands: the establishment of a fast-track tribunal to deliver a verdict within 30 days, impartial investigations with internationally recognized institutions, and the identification, arrest, and punishment of alleged “Awami League terrorists” hiding in civil and military intelligence. They also demanded the resignation of the Interior Minister, Special Assistants, and Law Advisor.
