ECP Rejects Balochistan Request, Quetta Polls Set

Published on: December 10, 2025 1:09 PM

ECP Rejects Balochistan Request

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Wednesday rejected Balochistan government’s plea to postpone Quetta local elections. The elections are scheduled for December 28. Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja signed the decision. The ECP said the provincial government’s petition lacked legal weight.

The commission upheld its earlier verdict from November 3, 2025. It reiterated that local government elections in Quetta will proceed as planned. Officials stressed the importance of following the electoral timeline. The ECP directed the provincial government to fully cooperate during the process.

The election commission also ordered strict security measures. Authorities will ensure protection for voters, polling staff, and candidates. Security arrangements aim to make the elections safe and fair.

Earlier, the Balochistan government requested a postponement of the Quetta Metropolitan Corporation elections. The request was denied by the ECP. Officials said the decision ensures continuity in local governance.

Local government elections in other Balochistan districts were held three years ago. The current bodies’ tenure will end in nine months. Quetta elections are therefore essential to maintain democratic processes in the capital.

The upcoming elections will be held in 172 union councils and 641 wards. A total of 2,710 candidates will contest in Quetta district. Voters are expected to actively participate in the democratic process.

The previous local bodies, elected in 2015, completed their tenure on January 27, 2019. Officials said timely elections are crucial for public services. The ECP urged authorities and citizens to ensure smooth and transparent voting.
