FIFA reveals 48-team World Cup 2026 draw

Published on: December 6, 2025 1:26 PM

FIFA announced the World Cup 2026 draw with 48 teams placed in 12 groups. Each group includes four teams. The tournament will kick off on 11 June with Mexico facing South Africa in the opening match. The mega event will feature matches across three host nations: Mexico, Canada, and the United States.

The opening ceremony started with music and a live performance by a popular American band. Leaders from all three host countries attended, including the US President and the Canadian and Mexican prime ministers. Fans worldwide watched the event, celebrating the return of the World Cup in a new expanded format.

FIFA confirmed that teams will play 104 matches during the tournament. Hosts Mexico, Canada, and the United States were placed in separate groups to ensure balanced competition. Organisers said the draw was designed to give every team a fair chance while creating exciting matchups for fans.

New rules were introduced to maintain competitiveness and diversity. Only one African and one Asian team can appear in the same group. Additionally, the top four teams—Argentina, France, Spain, and England—will not face each other before the semifinals. These changes aim to increase global engagement and fairness.
