Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in India on Thursday for a two-day visit focused on defence and trade. The visit comes amid US pressure on New Delhi to reduce Russian oil imports. Putin is accompanied by Defence Minister Andrei Belousov to discuss possible deals on fighter jets and air defence systems.
Putin called Prime Minister Narendra Modi “my friend” and praised the wide range of bilateral cooperation. Talks are expected to cover ship and aircraft manufacturing, nuclear energy, and space exploration. Modi will host a private dinner Thursday, followed by a summit meeting on Friday to finalize discussions.

Defence relations are a key focus, with India seeking advanced S-400 air defence systems and possible co-production of Russia’s Su-57 fighter jets. Russia has historically been India’s largest arms supplier, though its share of imports has declined in recent years. Both sides aim to maintain strategic ties despite international pressures.

Energy and trade issues are also central. India continues to import Russian oil, saving billions, but has reduced purchases under US sanctions on Moscow’s oil firms. Delhi seeks expanded market access for pharmaceuticals, automobiles, and services to reduce the trade imbalance with Russia.
