
ISLAMABAD – Pakistan has been elected as the Chairman of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) Council of Ministers for 2026-27, the Foreign Office confirmed on Saturday, Radio Pakistan reported. The decision was taken during the virtually held 29th ECO Council of Ministers meeting.

Foreign Ministers of ECO member states congratulated Pakistan on assuming the Chairmanship. Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar thanked them for their felicitations and support, expressing Pakistan’s commitment to working closely with ECO member states and hosting the next council meeting in the country.

While addressing the virtual meeting, Ishaq Dar reaffirmed Pakistan’s dedication to regional connectivity, multimodal transport corridors, sustainable development, and climate-resilient cooperation. He highlighted that Pakistan remains focused on advancing integrated and efficient transport networks in line with the ECO Vision 2025.
The Deputy Prime Minister emphasised that seamless regional connectivity could only be achieved in an environment of peace and security. He urged member states to collectively address terrorism and other security challenges, noting that overcoming such threats is crucial for stronger economic cooperation and the successful implementation of regional connectivity projects.

Ishaq Dar also congratulated Kazakhstan’s Foreign Minister, Yermek Kosherbayev, for assuming office and successfully hosting the 29th ECO Council of Ministers meeting. He expressed anticipation of welcoming ECO member states in Pakistan for the 30th meeting next year, underlining the country’s commitment to fostering regional cooperation and sustainable development.
