The Punjab School Education Department has announced plans to launch a mandatory teachers’ licensing system in 2026 for both government and private school educators. This initiative aims to raise the overall quality of education across the province and ensure consistent teaching standards.
Under the new system, teachers will need to pass a standardized test to obtain their license. Only those who successfully clear the test will be eligible to teach, making licensing a key requirement for employment in schools. This move ensures accountability and professionalism in the teaching sector.

The summary of the proposed teacher licensing framework will be sent to the provincial cabinet for approval. Once approved, it will form the basis for extending contracts of temporary teachers, linking employment continuation directly to licensure status.
The responsibility of conducting the licensing test has been assigned to PECTA, which will oversee assessment procedures and certify qualified candidates. This centralized approach is expected to maintain fairness and uniform standards for all applicants across Punjab.
