HANGU: Three police personnel were martyred and at least one terrorist killed after a militant attack on the Qazi Talab checkpost in Hangu, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, on Wednesday night, authorities said. The provincial Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) described the assault as a “cowardly attack” carried out under the cover of darkness.

Hangu District Police Officer Khan Zeb Mohmand led the operation against the attackers, with police personnel reportedly surrounding the area and holding their ground “like a wall of lead”. The quick and decisive response by law enforcement ultimately foiled the assault.

The martyred officers were identified as Head Constable Wahid Shah, Head Constable Hikmat Khan, and Abdul Samad. The CTD statement noted that intense fighting continued for approximately two hours, during which several terrorists were reportedly killed.

“The terrorists exploited the darkness and the rocky mountainous terrain to flee, carrying their dead and wounded,” the statement said. However, authorities recovered the body of an armed terrorist during the subsequent search and strike operation.

Pakistan has witnessed a surge in militant attacks in recent years, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, following the termination of the ceasefire between the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and the government in 2022. Since ending the truce, the TTP has vowed to target security forces, police, and other law enforcement personnel.

Officials emphasized the bravery and resilience of the police force in responding to the attack despite challenging conditions. The operation underscores the ongoing security challenges in the region and the persistent threat posed by militant groups in Pakistan.

Authorities have vowed to continue pursuing terrorists and enhancing security measures to prevent similar attacks in the future, ensuring the safety of personnel and civilians in the region.
