Islamabad: The National Assembly will debate and approve new rules for the Army, Navy, and Air Force on Friday. The legislation follows the recent 27th constitutional amendment. It aims to align all three services with updated operational and administrative requirements.
Under the amended constitution, the Prime Minister will appoint the Chief of Defence Forces, Air Chief, and Naval Chief on the Army Chief’s recommendation. The Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee chairman position will end on November 27, 2025. Officers promoted to field marshal, air marshal, or admiral will retain their ranks, privileges, and uniforms for life.

The amendment also extends constitutional protection to top military posts. They can only be removed following Article 47 procedures. Additionally, the presidential immunity under Article 248 now applies to these officers. New legislation through a parliamentary act will implement the changes and ensure practical application.
Current Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Babar Sidhu will receive a five-year extension starting March next year. He has led the Air Force since March 19, 2021, and previously received a one-year extension in March 2024. His leadership during May 2025 operations against India may earn him the honorary rank of Marshal of the Air Force, making him the first Air Chief with this distinction.

Meanwhile, the Army will appoint two more four-star generals. One will become Vice Chief of Army Staff, and the other will command the National Strategic Command. Both will serve under Chief of Defence Forces, Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir. These moves aim to strengthen leadership and operational efficiency across Pakistan’s armed forces.
