
MADRID: Atletico Madrid defender Andrea Medina was rushed to hospital on Wednesday after suffering a traumatic brain injury during a Women’s Champions League clash against Juventus.
The 21-year-old left-back collapsed on the pitch following a collision with Juventus forward Barbara Bonansea at the Centro Deportivo Alcala de Henares. Medina remained unconscious for several minutes before receiving urgent medical attention and was stretchered off and transported to a hospital via ambulance.
English broadcaster Jacqui Oatley, commentating on the match, described the scene as “horrendous,” and later wished Medina a full recovery on social media. Atletico Madrid confirmed in a statement that the player sustained a traumatic brain injury but is “doing well” and is undergoing further tests as a precaution.
Medina began her senior career with Real Betis before joining Atletico Madrid in 2022. She remains under close medical supervision as club staff monitor her condition.
The incident overshadowed the match, highlighting the risks athletes face in competitive football, with fans and players alike expressing concern for Medina’s recovery.
