KARACHI — Police have arrested a man for allegedly opening fire on citizens who set ablaze a heavy vehicle involved in a deadly road accident that killed a young man and injured his wife in the city’s Garden area, officials said on Wednesday.
The incident occurred on Tuesday when angry residents torched a dumper truck after it struck a motorcycle, killing 23-year-old Shahzeb Shahid and injuring his wife, Misbah. A case was later registered against Liaquat Mehsud, the Sindh president of the All Dumper Truck Owners Association, and others for allegedly firing on the protesters.
According to South DIG Syed Asad Raza, police have arrested one suspect, identified as one of Mehsud’s gunmen, for firing at protesters. The weapon used in the incident has also been recovered, he said. “Raids are being conducted to arrest Liaquat Mehsud, the president of the dumpers association,” the DIG added.

In a separate development, the Garden police registered a case against former MQM-P MPA Kamran Farooqi under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (Peca) and Section 506-B (criminal intimidation) of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC) for allegedly threatening Mehsud through a social media video.
According to the FIR lodged by ASI Rao Muhammad Shahrukh, a video circulating online showed Farooqi saying that Mehsud was “fortunate” to have escaped being burned with his vehicle, calling the violence a “public reaction.” The police officer stated that the ex-lawmaker’s remarks constituted criminal intimidation and online incitement, adding that two related cases had already been registered at the Garden police station regarding the accident and ensuing violence.
