Hundreds of people, including women and children, visited the Lahore Zoo and Safari Park on Sunday to see the newly arrived animals, especially the giraffes, which attracted significant public attention. The zoo, currently undergoing a major upgrade project, witnessed a large turnout of families eager to welcome the new additions.
The eight giraffes, imported from South Africa by a private company, completed their mandatory quarantine period at Lahore Safari Park and were released for public viewing on Saturday. Of the total, two giraffes have been transferred to Lahore Zoo on Mall Road, while the remaining six are now on display at Lahore Safari Park, located near the Jallo area.
The arrival of the giraffes was also highlighted by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, who informed the public through a post on X (formerly Twitter). She wrote, “The arrival of giraffes imported from Africa at Lahore Zoo has restored the splendor of the deserted enclosures.”
It is noteworthy that three years ago, a male giraffe at Lahore Zoo passed away, leaving his female companion alone. Since then, the giraffe enclosure had remained without its iconic pair, leading to public disappointment.
Now, the long-awaited desire of children to see giraffes at both the Safari Park and Lahore Zoo has finally been fulfilled. The joyful reactions of families, especially children, reflect the excitement surrounding the arrival of these majestic animals.
Officials stated that the successful import and exhibition of giraffes not only enriches the public experience but also symbolizes the restoration of international confidence in Punjab’s wildlife management.
Over the past eighteen months, the provincial government has implemented historic reforms and improvements in the wildlife sector, aligning with international standards. The arrival of the giraffes is being viewed as a milestone in that transformation.
