China fills labor gaps with 300,000 robots

Published on: October 6, 2025 6:04 PM

China is rapidly turning to robots to solve its growing workforce shortage. In 2024 alone, the country installed 295,000 new industrial robots. This major step comes as China’s population continues to shrink, with a 0.1% drop reported last year. Experts say robots are helping to fill labor gaps, especially in the manufacturing sector. China now leads the world with over 2 million active industrial robots.

The use of robots has increased in key industries like automotive and electronics. These machines are assembling car frames, moving heavy goods, and putting together electronic devices. In fact, more than half of all new robots installed worldwide last year were in China. The country accounted for 54% of the 542,000 robots deployed globally. This strong growth highlights China’s push toward automation amid demographic changes.

According to the International Federation of Robotics, China has the largest number of active industrial robots worldwide. Japan and the United States follow behind. Japan added only 4,500 robots in 2024, while the US installed 34,200. Globally, robot installations rose by 9%, reaching 4.66 million units. This shows a strong global trend, but China is clearly leading the way.

China is also moving toward the next big step: humanoid robots. These robots look and move like humans and may soon play a larger role in industry. One company in Guangdong received an order for 10,000 humanoid robots, the biggest in history. These robots will reportedly be used to care for the elderly. This shows how China is preparing for its aging population.

In summary, China is responding to its labor shortage with rapid automation. As the workforce ages and shrinks, robots are stepping in to keep factories running. The shift not only boosts productivity but also positions China as a leader in robotic technology. With growing investment and innovation, the country is reshaping how industries operate in the future.
