Pakistan removed from WADA watchlist after completing reforms

Published on: September 12, 2025 6:37 PM

Pakistan has been removed from the World Anti-Doping Agency’s (WADA) watchlist after completing all required reforms, according to the Pakistan Sports Board (PSB). The country was placed on the list in September 2024 for failing to fully implement WADA’s updated anti-doping code. This raised concerns of possible sanctions, including bans on athletes competing under the national flag.

However, WADA has now confirmed that Pakistan’s Anti-Doping Organization (ADOP) has met all remaining compliance measures. The global body officially ended its monitoring of Pakistan after a follow-up review in September reaffirmed that no further supervision was needed. This development removes any speculation about penalties or international isolation for Pakistani athletes.

The PSB revealed that WADA communicated the decision via email to Shahid Islam, the board’s Deputy Director General. The reforms were implemented under the leadership of PSB Director General Yasir Pirzada. These included aligning national policy with international standards and improving anti-doping procedures.

Pirzada called the development a “lifeline” for Pakistan’s athletes and sports federations. He emphasized that this is more than a bureaucratic success — it is vital for ensuring the country’s presence on major international sports platforms. The approval arrives as Pakistan prepares to participate in major events.

WADA had previously given a four-month grace period to seven countries, including Pakistan, to meet compliance requirements. Failure to do so by January would have triggered automatic non-compliance. This could have banned Pakistani athletes from competing internationally under their flag, threatening further sporting isolation.
