14 injured in Russian drone strike on Ukraine’s Sumy

Published on: August 20, 2025 3:48 PM

At least 14 people, including a family with three children, were wounded in a Russian drone strike on Ukraine’s Sumy region overnight, Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko confirmed Wednesday. The attack struck residential areas in the Okhtyrka district, causing injuries to children aged 5 months, 4 years, and 6 years.

The strike came amid renewed diplomatic efforts by U.S. President Donald Trump to bring an end to the ongoing war. However, Moscow’s escalation in drone warfare shows no signs of slowing. Local prosecutors reported that 15 drones targeted the Okhtyrka area in the early hours of the day.

“Russia continues its campaign of terror against sleeping families,” Svyrydenko said on X (formerly Twitter), calling the attack another example of deliberate targeting of civilians.

In total, Russia launched 93 drones and two missiles across Ukraine overnight, according to the Ukrainian Air Force. Air defenses intercepted 62 drones and one missile, but 20 locations recorded hits. The southern Odesa region also came under heavy fire, with one person injured and a massive blaze reported at a fuel and energy facility.

Russia’s stepped-up campaign has focused heavily on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. In recent days, attacks have struck oil depots, gas facilities, and transport systems. One depot targeted belonged to Azerbaijan’s state oil firm SOCAR. According to Ukraine’s Energy Ministry, energy sites have been hit 2,900 times since March 2025 alone.
