Land mafia defies authorities in Lahore

Published on: August 7, 2025 6:17 AM

In a blatant defiance of government orders, the notorious land mafia has resumed the illegal construction of a commercial plaza in the Wahga Zone – just ten days after a partial demolition operation was carried out.

The reconstruction began despite clear written directives from the Secretary Local Government Board and a formal order issued by Deputy Commissioner Lahore and MCL Administrator. Sources confirm that both the DC’s decision and the Secretary’s instructions were willfully ignored by officials on ground.

The plaza, previously identified as an illegal structure, was partially demolished during a recent operation. However, due to the incomplete and poorly executed action, the mafia has not only reoccupied the site but has resumed construction work with renewed aggression.

Local eyewitnesses report that for the past two days, the site has been active with construction workers installing main gates and continuing internal development under the pretext of “plaza sealing.” The activity is taking place in broad daylight while officials from the Municipal Corporation Lahore (MCL) and Wahga Zone allegedly remain absent or silent, despite receiving timely information.

The same mafia group had earlier launched a violent attack on government officials including officers from PEERA Force and the Assistant Commissioner of Shalimar during a prior operation. Firing incidents were reported at the scene, narrowly missing the AC. Authorities believe the group is now regrouping and assembling armed criminals to resist any future enforcement efforts.

Citizens and civil society members have expressed serious concerns over the lawlessness and alleged collusion of some municipal staff in enabling the mafia’s actions. The failure to fully implement demolition orders and prevent re-construction has raised serious questions regarding the efficacy and impartiality of MCL and Wahga Zone enforcement teams.

As the land mafia continues to challenge the state’s writ, calls are growing for immediate high-level intervention to prevent further bloodshed and to restore the rule of law.
