In a significant move to improve travel arrangements for religious pilgrims, Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority (PCAA) has invited licensed operators to begin chartered flights from Pakistan to Iran and Iraq. This decision follows the federal government’s recent ban on road travel to these countries due to growing security concerns for pilgrims.
The PCAA issued a formal announcement offering all valid air charter license holders the opportunity to submit applications. These charter services are meant to support the large number of Pakistani pilgrims who travel each year for religious observances, especially during Arbaeen in Iraq and other major events in Iran.
Importantly, the PCAA assured that all applications linked to religious tourism will be processed with priority. Officials added that they will work closely with relevant departments to ensure that pilgrims are provided safe, comfortable, and timely air travel during this peak pilgrimage season.
Earlier this year, the federal government had stopped allowing road-based pilgrimages to Iran and Iraq. This step was taken to prevent any possible harm to pilgrims following rising threats reported along traditional overland routes. The shift to air travel aims to offer a safer alternative without disrupting religious practices.
Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi reaffirmed the decision by sharing an update on social media platform X (formerly Twitter). He clearly stated that pilgrims will not be allowed to travel by road and that only flights will be permitted to Iran and Iraq for Arbaeen this year.
This move is being welcomed by many religious tour organizers, as it opens up safer and faster travel options. With the charter flight option now available, operators are expected to respond quickly and help thousands of pilgrims make their journey without the risk associated with land routes.
