ISLAMABAD – Heavy rains in Islamabad and Rawalpindi triggered flash floods on Tuesday, sweeping away a car carrying a retired army officer and his young daughter. The alarming incident occurred near a storm drain in a private housing society where the vehicle was caught in the rising water.
A disturbing video widely shared on social media shows the grey car being swept into the powerful floodwaters. According to rescue officials, Colonel (retd) Ishaq Qazi and his 25-year-old daughter were in the vehicle when it drifted away due to the strong water flow.
Sources revealed that Qazi had left his house with his daughter before their car stopped near the overflowing drain. He was attempting to restart the vehicle when the water level suddenly rose, sweeping both passengers away in the current.
In response to the situation, rescue teams quickly launched a search operation in hopes of locating the missing individuals. However, the strong currents and water levels have made the search more challenging. Authorities have urged residents to avoid driving during heavy downpours near flood-prone zones.
Meanwhile, the Capital Development Authority (CDA) has rolled out a city-wide emergency response plan. This includes 24/7 monitoring, rapid-response units, and efforts to clear roads and drains to prevent further accidents and ensure public safety.
CDA Chairman Muhammad Ali Randhawa assured citizens that their main focus is on preparedness and immediate response. He also encouraged the public to use the emergency helpline “1334” to report issues such as waterlogging, blocked drains, or sewer overflows during the monsoon season.
