A new ship from the Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC) named Handala prepared to leave Italy’s Gallipoli port on Sunday, aiming to break Israel’s naval blockade on Gaza. The ship, loaded with humanitarian aid and messages of support, carries civilian activists from around the world, including doctors, lawyers, and journalists.
The activists released a video on Telegram just before launching, where they explained their mission. They stated that the ship holds toys for Gaza’s children, along with essential aid and letters of solidarity. According to the FFC, this voyage highlights global support for Palestinian civilians and demands unrestricted humanitarian access.
The Handala was later seen sailing toward Gaza, continuing the Freedom Flotilla’s long-standing efforts to deliver help directly. Last month, another ship in the flotilla, Madleen, was intercepted by Israeli naval forces. That ship had carried prominent activists, including Swedish climate advocate Greta Thunberg.
Despite international pressure and ongoing negotiations, access to Gaza remains restricted. Talks between Israel and Hamas, mediated by Qatar and Egypt, are currently underway in Doha. The goal is to reach a 60-day ceasefire agreement that includes a hostage exchange and improved humanitarian conditions.
However, progress remains slow. While both sides are under pressure to end the war that has devastated Gaza since October 2023, no breakthrough has been achieved yet. The Handala mission adds urgency by drawing attention to the continuing humanitarian crisis.
Meanwhile, the Freedom Flotilla continues to push for peaceful resistance through non-violent means. Organizers hope their voyage will remind the world of Gaza’s suffering and keep the demand for open humanitarian channels alive.
