ISLAMABAD — The Islamabad High Court expressed strong anger at the federal government for failing to submit a report on Dr. Aafia Siddiqui’s release, health, and return to Pakistan. The court hinted at possible action against the Prime Minister and federal ministers for contempt of court.
During the hearing, Justice Sardar Ejaz Ishaq Khan questioned the Additional Attorney General Rashid Hafeez about the delay in presenting the report, which had been requested earlier but remains unsubmitted. The court warned that if the report is not provided soon, the entire federal cabinet could be summoned.
Justice Ishaq Khan said, “Why not initiate contempt proceedings against all federal ministers? This court can take action not only against the cabinet but also against the Prime Minister.” The court reminded that the government was asked for a reply in June but has yet to respond.
The court gave the federal government three more days to submit the report, while the Additional Attorney General requested five working days, citing upcoming annual leave. The court then postponed the hearing until July 21.
Dr. Fozia Siddiqui’s lawyer, Imran Shafiq, also mentioned filing a request for a meeting with the Prime Minister and cabinet. Justice Ishaq Khan questioned the need, asking if the Prime Minister was unaware of the case details.
The court made it clear that no further delays would be tolerated, stressing that the government’s report must be submitted by the next hearing on July 21.
