Pakistan is set to launch a direct ferry service from Gwadar to Gulf countries, aiming to boost regional trade, improve passenger movement, and attract tourism. The move is expected to enhance Pakistan’s connectivity with the Middle East and provide a much-needed economic lift to the Balochistan region.
Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Junaid Anwar Chaudhry announced the plan during a high-level meeting in Islamabad. He said the ferry service will create jobs, strengthen people-to-people ties, and support industries like hospitality, shipping, and local transport. The government hopes this will also ease pressure on Karachi’s busy ports.
Additionally, officials discussed setting up new shipping lines connected to Gwadar to increase cargo flow and strengthen transit trade with Central Asia and the Middle East. The goal is to turn Gwadar into a regional hub for logistics and maritime operations, according to the minister.
Gwadar Port, developed under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), holds strategic importance due to its location near key Gulf shipping routes. However, it has not yet achieved the commercial success of Karachi’s ports. The new ferry and shipping initiatives aim to change that by rebalancing trade and unlocking Gwadar’s potential.
The Ministry of Maritime Affairs is working with private shipping firms, port authorities, and legal experts to finalize operational plans. Safety, affordability, and environmental sustainability will be top priorities as the project moves forward.
The ferry service also aligns with Pakistan’s National Maritime Policy, which focuses on developing the country’s blue economy. Officials believe this step will strengthen regional ties and create long-term benefits for Pakistan’s trade and economic growth.
