The Sindh government has taken a major step to modernize public transport by deciding to introduce a large number of electric vehicle (EV) and hybrid buses across the province. This decision came during a recent meeting of the Transport Department chaired by Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon.
Sharjeel Memon announced that within the next few months, double-decker buses will start operating on Karachi’s busiest routes. These buses will provide higher passenger capacity and are expected to ease congestion on city roads. He further stated that the government aims to completely shift the transport system to electric buses in the near future to promote sustainability and reduce air pollution.
This initiative marks the first time double-decker buses will be deployed in Sindh, signaling a significant upgrade in public transport infrastructure. The move is part of a larger plan to enhance urban mobility while focusing on environmentally friendly solutions in line with global trends.
Officials said the procurement process is underway, and the buses will be equipped with modern facilities such as air conditioning, comfortable seating, and advanced safety features. The government hopes that these improvements will encourage more people to use public transport, reducing traffic jams and lowering carbon emissions.
The transport department is working closely with manufacturers and service providers to ensure the timely arrival and smooth operation of the new fleet. Senior Minister Sharjeel Memon expressed confidence that these changes will significantly improve commuting experiences in Sindh and set an example for other provinces to follow.
