Benazir bhutto’s legacy lives on: 72nd birthday celebrated nationwide

Published on: June 21, 2025 2:58 PM

LAHORE (June 21, 2025) – The 72nd birth anniversary of Benazir Bhutto, Pakistan’s first female prime minister and a symbol of democracy, is being commemorated today across the country. Known worldwide as the Daughter of the East and the Martyr of Democracy, Benazir remains a towering figure in Pakistan’s political history.

Ceremonies are being held in major cities, including cake-cutting events, party gatherings, and memorial talks. These tributes honor her lifelong struggle for democracy and her ultimate sacrifice in the fight against extremism and dictatorship. People from all walks of life are reflecting on her legacy and contributions.

Born on June 21, 1953, in Karachi, Benazir was the daughter of former Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto. She received her education at Harvard and Oxford, and was active in politics from a young age. Following her father’s arrest and execution, she led the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) alongside her mother Begum Nusrat Bhutto and became a central figure in the resistance to military rule.

Benazir was twice elected as Prime Minister — first in 1988, making history as the first woman to lead a Muslim-majority country. Her terms were short-lived due to dismissals in 1990 and 1996, but she continued to inspire millions through her resilience. She returned from exile in 2007 to lead PPP’s campaign, but was assassinated on December 27, 2007, in Rawalpindi after addressing a rally.

Today, political leaders, activists, and citizens alike pay tribute to her memory. Her courage, vision, and commitment to democracy remain deeply respected in Pakistan and around the world. Benazir Bhutto’s life and martyrdom continue to influence Pakistan’s political landscape and democratic journey.
