Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has announced a historic program to provide free higher education to children of industrial and mine workers. The initiative covers all expenses at COMSATS University and applies to seven campuses across the country. The program is seen as a major step toward uplifting the working class through equal access to education.
CM Maryam stated that children of registered, deceased, and disabled workers will benefit from this program. The Punjab government will pay their full tuition fees. She declared, “No child will be deprived of education because of financial problems.” Her government aims to promote social justice and support families who serve as the backbone of the province’s economy.
The seven eligible campuses include Islamabad, Lahore, Abbottabad, Wah, Attock, Sahiwal, and Vehari. CM Maryam emphasized that this is a first-of-its-kind opportunity for workers’ families. She said that education and healthcare are top priorities, and her administration is committed to providing long-term relief and empowerment to labourers.
Officials informed the CM that the Worker Welfare Fund has started accepting applications. Students must apply online through the COMSATS University website. Deadlines will differ by campus and are set between early July and mid-August.
Applicants must also submit documents at the university’s admission office. These include copies of the worker’s CNIC, the worker registration certificate, the student’s CNIC or B-form, and proof of social security or pension enrollment. The program aims to make higher education more inclusive and accessible for all hardworking families in Punjab.
