Air India plane crashes near Ahmedabad airport, 242 passengers onboard

Published on: June 12, 2025 2:06 PM

An Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crashed near Ahmedabad Airport in Gujarat, India, shortly after takeoff on Thursday. The flight AI 171 was heading to London with 230 passengers and 12 crew members onboard. Authorities fear casualties as smoke was seen rising from the crash site close to residential areas. Rescue teams and fire brigades responded immediately to the emergency.

The plane, registered VT-ANB, took off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. According to FlightRadar, the last signal from the aircraft was received just seconds after takeoff at 08:08:51 UTC. Local police confirmed the plane crashed near densely populated neighborhoods, but details on injuries or fatalities are still unclear. Rescue and relief operations are ongoing.

Indian media sources report varying passenger counts, causing some confusion about the total number onboard. The crash has led to immediate concerns over the safety of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner model. Investigators have begun preliminary inquiries to determine the cause of the accident.

Home Minister Amit Shah contacted Gujarat’s Chief Minister, Home Minister, and Police Commissioner to oversee the response. He assured that the central government would provide all necessary support to affected families and local authorities managing the crisis.

This tragic event has shocked the nation and raised serious questions about flight safety standards. Authorities continue to work around the clock to rescue survivors, gather evidence, and support the victims’ families during this difficult time.
