PBF calls for stronger government backing to uplift handicrafts sector

Published on: June 1, 2025 6:08 PM

LAHORE – The Pakistan Business Forum (PBF) has urged the federal and provincial governments to boost support for the handicrafts sector, especially in South Punjab and Balochistan, citing its potential to create jobs and preserve cultural heritage.

Ayesha Farooqui, Chairperson of the PBF Women Wing, said traditional crafts from underserved regions are already in demand. With the right policy support and market access, they could significantly improve rural household incomes, particularly for women.

She emphasized the need for government-led trade fairs, exhibitions, and craft bazaars to promote local artisans. These events, both domestic and international, would help connect rural producers to wider markets and strengthen their visibility.

Farooqui also called for structured skills assessments and capacity-building programs. She noted that by training artisans and introducing value-added techniques, the government can enhance product quality and increase global competitiveness.

In addition, she proposed setting up permanent handicraft stalls through provincial governments. These stalls could support cultural preservation, generate steady income, and provide local communities with sustainable employment opportunities.

Highlighting limited global outreach, Farooqui urged officials to improve digital strategies and use e-commerce platforms for international promotion. “This is about more than just the economy—it’s about empowering women and protecting our cultural identity,” she concluded.
