Pakistan’s National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has introduced a new initiative offering lifetime Computerised National Identity Cards (CNICs) to citizens who pledge to donate their organs. The newly designed Smart National Identity Cards (SNIC) will feature a green heart symbol, signifying the individual’s commitment to humanitarian causes. This step aims to encourage organ donation across the country, making it easier for citizens to show their support for life-saving initiatives.
The lifetime CNICs are available to Pakistani citizens aged 18 and above who voluntarily agree to become organ donors. Applicants can obtain the specially marked CNIC or National Identity Card for Overseas Pakistanis (NICOP) by visiting any NADRA registration center. The feature is also accessible via the Pak-ID mobile application, making it easier for people to register their pledge digitally.
In addition to the CNIC initiative, NADRA has also launched a new digital system for registering births and deaths at hospitals and healthcare centers nationwide. This move is part of an effort to modernize the country’s civil registration system. NADRA has signed agreements with provincial governments to implement this system, ensuring that birth and death records are updated efficiently and accurately.
A formal ceremony to sign the agreements was held in Karachi, attended by various government officials, including the Sindh secretary of health, the secretary of local government, and NADRA Sindh Director General Ehtesham Shahid. The event emphasized the importance of collaboration between NADRA and provincial authorities to improve civil registration services in Pakistan.
These initiatives aim to streamline administrative processes and encourage more people to consider organ donation, which could save many lives. With easier access to registration and a clear symbol of contribution, NADRA hopes to foster a culture of giving and social responsibility.
