The interconnected pursuit of clean energy

Published on: April 18, 2024 2:16 AM

The world is grappling with the reality of climate change, and all sectors are at the forefront of the global shift towards sustainable energy. Various organisations especially within the energy sector are demonstrating a robust commitment to clean energy initiatives that not only contribute to environmental conservation but also promote economic development and social equity. Across the world, and South-East Asia is no exception where energy distribution companies are striving to add renewables in their energy mix to overcome the energy trilemma defined as the need to find balance between energy reliability, affordability, and sustainability and its impact on everyday lives.

Globally at least thirty nations have already installed renewable energy resources contributing more than 20% to the energy mix. Work on policy reforms, targets via initiatives to help the planet go green are in progress. Green is sustainable and with that deep understanding of the significance of green energy one of the leading power-providing companies in Pakistan has undertaken multifaceted initiatives aimed at transforming Karachi’s energy landscape.

Significant steps towards going sustainable include addition of 640 megawatts (MW) of renewable capacity to the local grid. Helmed by K-Electric (KE), the Winder and Bela Solar Projects (150 MW), the Dhabeji Site Neutral Hybrid Plant (220MW), and the Sindh Solar Energy Project (SSEP) under the tripartite agreement with the World Bank and the Government of Sindh collectively represent a diverse set of initiatives to harness solar energy. Through this collaboration, KE will witness an additional seven hundred GWh of clean energy in its supply mix which stands to offset carbon emissions by up to 350 kilotons per annum. These projects strategically aim to bring down the costs and reduce the environment impact associated with conventional energy sources.

Keeping in view the vision of the government for induction of cheap and clean renewable energy into the system, the introduction of net metering in the megacity stands out as an effective move towards encouraging renewable energy production at the consumer level. Through this innovative billing mechanism, the consumers gain the financial credit for the electricity they generate using solar power and they also get to contribute their excess electricity back to the grid.

In alignment with the national objectives, the Power Acquisition Program aims to integrate 1,200MW of renewable energy into its portfolio by 2030. This strategic initiative not only aligns with the government’s targets but positions the power utility as a key player in steering Pakistan towards a more sustainable energy future. The reduced dependence on expensive imported fuel, will be a significant contribution to mitigating environmental impacts, fostering a resilient energy infrastructure in Pakistan.

To ensure the seamless integration of variable renewable energy (VRE) into its network, K-Electric is undertaking a VRE Integration Study in collaboration with international consultants. This proactive approach involves a meticulous assessment of optimal capacity for renewables, consideration of technical constraints, and the maintenance of grid reliability. The study also identifies necessary network augmentation efforts and explores strategies to maximize renewable utilization, aiming at further reducing electricity costs for consumers in the city it serves.

These comprehensive initiatives for clean energy reflect a holistic and forward-thinking approach. By engaging in capacity addition, empowering consumers, promoting financial inclusivity, and actively contributing to the national sustainability goals, Pakistan’s only vertically integrated power utility is playing a pivotal role in shaping a cleaner, sustainable, and inclusive energy future for Karachi and in doing so, they are creating a perfect roadmap for Pakistan as a whole.
