ISLAMABAD: A legislative body of the National Assembly on Wednesday was informed that the former management of the Employees Old-Age Benefits Institution (EOBI) purchased real estate in different parts of the country at exorbitant rates in connivance with the sellers. This was stated at a meeting of the National Assembly Standing Committee on Overseas Pakistanis and Human Resources Development at the Parliament House on Wednesday. Mir Aamir Ali Khan Magsi, member of the National Assembly, chaired the meeting. Briefing the committee, the EOBI chairman said the issue was pending in the Supreme Court and the attorney general of Pakistan would appear in the court to seek early hearing of the case. He said that most of the accused were under arrest, while some of them had been granted bail either on statuary or medical grounds. It was brought into the notice of the committee that cases had not yet been registered against sellers of four properties. The committee expressed its displeasure with the issue and directed the EOBI management to take up with the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) the issue of registration of cases against the people linked to this scam. The committee also directed the ministry and the EOBI to keep it informed about the progress on the case. The committee directed the EOBI to pursue the cases for early recovery of the money misappropriated in the name of purchase of property at exorbitant rates. The committee directed the FIA to accelerate the investigation into the cases against the accused. Later, the committee referred The Factories (Amendment) Bill, 2016, moved by National Assembly Member Asiya Naaz Tanoli, to the Ministry of Interior for its input.
