ISLAMABAD: Federal government campaign against defaulters of electricity bills has failed all together despite hiring of the services of National Accountability Bureau (NAB)as only Rs28.5 million could be recovered till March 31, 2016. In a written reply, the Ministry of Water and Power itself admitted in parliament that NAB’s efforts could not produce effective results and the campaign against defaulters now seems in doldrums. As approved by the cabinet committee on energy,running as well as disconnected defaulters having arrears of above Rs 100,000 and up to one year old were referred to NAB by the power distribution companiesfor recovery, the minister for water and power informed parliament. “We had sent cases of current and disconnected,both domestic and commercial,defaulters to NAB for recovery of Rs63.09 billion,but NAB could make recovery of Rs28.5 million from only 219 defaulters out of a list of a list of 232,662. According to data available with Daily Times,there are 222,495 running consumers who are defaulter of Rs59.719 billion and NAB was able to recover Rs14.11 million from 125 defaulters only. Some 222,370 running defaulters still have to pay Rs59.7 billion. While 10,167 cases of disconnected defaulters were sent to NAB for recovery of Rs3.37 billion, but it could recover only Rs14.434 million from 94 consumers. According to the ministry’s data, NAB failed to recover billions of rupees from 7,258 commercial,1,674 industrial and 314 agricultural customers.
