LAHORE: Youm-e-Ali (RA) was observed with peace, harmony and religious fervour amidst tight security in the provincial capital on Monday. Punjab government, police and other concerned authorities made foolproof security arrangements on the occasion, as thousands of officials belonging to police, rescue organizations and bomb disposal squads were deployed along the procession route as well as entry points. Volunteers also assisted the security personnel in managing the overall situation. Ramazan 21 across the world is marked as the day of martyrdom of Islam’s fourth caliph Hazrat Ali (RA). Caliph Ali (RA), also known as the lion-hearted, was martyred while he was offering prayer in a mosque in Syria. Several processions were held in the city to mark this day but the main procession was taken out from Mubarak Haveli to Karbala Gamay Shah after passing though its traditional route. The procession reached its destination in the evening after crossing through Bazaar Hakiman, Rang Mahal, Paniwala Talab and Bhatti Chowk. However, several small processions and sermons were held in areas including Dharampura, Thokar Niaz Baig, Imamia Colony, Raiwind and Chungi Amar Sidhu. Tight security arrangements were made on the occasion as mourners had to pass through three layers of checking before entering the procession route. The government deployed around 3,000 police personnel while the services of Elite Force, Mujahid Force and Dolphin Force were also taken to maintain safety on the occasion. Walkthrough gates were set up where police officials along with volunteers were deployed to check people entering the procession route. However, low number of walkthrough gates and few entry points caused massive rush at the gates, especially on the female side. CCTV cameras were also installed while the mobile service was also blocked at Karbala Gamay Shah in the evening. Meanwhile, bystanders were also not allowed to roam around the entry points, rooftops of nearby houses and shops. Special teams of Rescue 1122 and Bomb Disposal Squad were also deployed at various points along the procession route. Although Lahore Waste Management Company (LWMC) and Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) announced that the procession route was cleaned, but sewerage water caused problems for mourners, especially at Bhatti Chowk.
