Water is life. Nature has given organs to control body’s specific function. Like brain, heart and lungs, kidneys are also vital organs of human body. Life without kidneys is impossible. That is why God has gifted every human being with two kidneys. These regulate our water balance along with other functions. This was stated by Prof. Dr. Malik Hussain Jalbani, Chairman, Department of Urology, Chandka Medical College and Hospital, while talking to this scribe on Thursday on World Kidney Day. He said for every human being it is necessary to drink adequate water so that may be able to excrete waste product produced in our body. So everybody must take 3 to 4 litre, means 12 to 15 glasses of water daily. Another most important thing is as we are living in temperate conditions so we may require more water. So for that we have to maintain 1.5 to 2 litres of urine output daily to expel waste products, he added. There are main causes of kidney disease like Diabetes Mellitus, Hypertension, stones in kidneys, and bcysts developed in kidneys. So to prevent our kidneys we have to control our sugar level. If anyone has diabetes he should control take proper medication and regular exercise plus diet control as advised by doctor, he said. Also control his blood pressure by decreasing salt intake and medication to control blood pressure. 3rd cause of kidney disease is stones. For that all patients must visit to Urologist for prevention and cure of stones timely. If stones not treated at time leads to kidney failure in same way like diabetes and hypertension. Our message to public is to drink plenty of clean and safe drinking water, control and prevention of diabetes and hypertension. Regular exercise, minimizing junk food of hotels and bakeries. And increasing fruits and salads in our diet, Prof Jalbani advised. If kidney fails then only 2 options are left. One is lifelong dialysis and other is kidney transplant. So my message is keep your kidneys healthy, he said. If your kidneys are healthy means you are healthy. Because everyone knows prevention is better than cure. That’s why world kidney is celebrated every year 2nd Thursday of March to give awareness to public regarding kidneys, he concluded.
