A 10-year-old girl was found dead after being raped in Islamabad. The incident has left the country in shock as there is a chilling resemblance to the case of seven-year-old Zainab in Kasur, which points to an increasingly brutal society in which children are abused and discarded at whim. Several celebrities are also coming out to condemn the incident with the hashtag #JusticeforFarishta trending everywhere. However, people have been questioning the silence of model Eman Suleman over the recent rape incidents that has shook the country, as the model is always quite vocal over social issues, hence people expect her to call out such heinous crimes. Addressing all these questions, Eman Suleman wrote a long post on Instagram, clarifying why she chose to not raise a voice for rape victims like Farishta and Zainab. ‘A lot of you have been messaging and questioning me for not raising my voice for Farishta and you did the same when I didn’t raise my voice for Zainab. You haven’t been kind about it. As a matter of fact, you’ve been cruel. Farishta and Zainab are just two, amongst countless, the ones who get social media coverage and then, the ones who don’t’ Sharing a picture of a crow, she said, “I understand the contempt and criticism I receive for not raising my voice for rape victims. A lot of you have been messaging me, questioning me, for not raising my voice for Farishta, and you did the same when I didn’t raise my voice for Zainab. You haven’t been kind about it. As a matter of fact, you’ve been cruel. Farishta and Zainab are just two, amongst countless, the ones who get social media coverage, and then, the ones who don’t. So many. If I start, there won’t be an end.” Mentioning some of the rape incidents she read about on social media, she said, “I thought about making it about the rapists instead of the victims. I was Googling pictures and articles, so I could show you their faces. There are hardly any. There are more rape victims and dead bodies than there are rapists and murderers,” she said, adding, “I do evade this, I’m not going to lie,” she said. “Don’t confuse my silence for complicity. If you want to make a change, hold enablers, perpetrators, apologists accountable. Protest in front of their houses, their offices, their stations, on the streets. Mein tyaar hun. Aap bhi ho jayein,” the model wrote.
