KARACHI: Despite passage of more than five years, the Sindh government seems least concerned to establish the International University of Peace, Sufism and Modern Sciences at Bhitshah, district Matiyari, even after the passage of five years it is learnt. The International University of Peace and Sufism (IUPS) was inaugurated by Dr. Nazir A. Mughal, Vice Chancellor of University of Sindh at Bhitshah, Matiyari in September 2012. And the classes of the university stared conducting from October 2012 at six temporarily acquired rooms of Government Boys High School at Bhitshah. The sources told Daily Times that at present the university exists only on official papers as no classes are being run since the last eight months, adding that presently the university is affiliated with Sindh university Jamshooro offering 7 courses of modern sciences along with the course of Sufism. The objectives of the university was to make students of today the statesmen and administrators of tomorrow including the knowledge about the role of Sufi’s in Sindh . Main objective of the studies was to enable the students to apply their best talents to make Pakistan a great nation. The students of Bhitshah campus were to be made familiar with the complexity of the national and international problems and to cultivate a scientific and unbiased approach to all such problems. Its aims were to provide the knowledge with all clarity and fundamental concepts. USMS focuses to provide research environment and to promote scientific research. USMS aim was to promote & provide higher education at door steps, promoting research activities to introduce Research Journal on Sufism & Peace. Such efforts by USMS would have improved the female education so that they can compete in the world that will enable and increase the literacy rate in the area and uplift the level of living standards of the local people. USMS was also looking forward to create job opportunities for the locals. University had to arrange various lecturers/workshops and seminars to update the information and to promote the academic atmosphere with the expertise of renowned speakers for the students of USMS. Currently there are 350 students enrolled with a question and concern about the future of the institute. The land for the university has been identified however the process of acquiring the land has not been finalized following negligence of the authorities concerned. The Charter of the University was approved by the Sindh Assembly in 2011 since then the government seems non serious to finalize the dream project of their slain leader Benazir Bhutto. The university had announced to offer masters’ degrees in any field related to Sufism like meditation, interfaith harmony, and poetic works of renowned Sufis including Shah Bhittai focusing on religious harmony. The university would have had three major wings: Sufi thought and practice; mystic poetry and literature and South Asian arts (fine arts, folk music, performing arts and architecture). It would have followed admission quotas for all provinces to ensure a geographically diverse student body. Interestingly, the university had also advertised two degree programs that included Bachelor of Business Administration BBA and Bachelor of Computer Science BCS.
