Khurshid Shah: PPP will not compromise on 18th Amendment

Published on: September 27, 2018 12:07 PM

Pakistan People’s Party will not compromise a single point of the 18th Amendment to the Constitution of Pakistan, Syed Khurshid Shah, member of PPP, said Wednesday.

“People within the government and parliament are talking about ending the 18th Amendment,” Shah said. “But they don’t have the majority vote to bring about such a huge constitutional amendment.”

Before the 18th Amendment, the office of the president was the center of authority and supremacy as the head of state, having the power to overthrow the elected prime minister and dismiss the elected Parliament.

After 18th Amendment, however, the president cannot dissolve the assembly unilaterally. The president also has constitutional immunity from criminal and civil proceedings during the term of his office. North-West Frontier Province was renamed to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and the amendment transferred significant powers to each province.

PPP stands against changes to the 18th Amendment, no matter how many cases are filed, Shah said.
