Sindh Education Minister Sardar Shah warned that the registration of private schools would be cancelled if they increased their tuition fees by more than 5 percent and did not reimburse the extra charged amount that had been taken from student’s parents. Minister Sardar Shah said that the ministry had the authority to take strict action against private schools if they did not abide by orders from Sindh High Court (SHC). It is worth mentioning that the SHC, in a recent order, prohibited private schools from raising their fees over 5 percent per annum. A three-judge bench constituting Justice Aqeel Ahmed Abbasi, Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar and Justice Ashraf Jehan had given out the verdict based on petitions filed by parents over the increase in school fees. During the hearing, the petitioner’s council said that the salaries paid to teachers did not even make up 50 percent of the school overheads. “School earnings should be considered along with their expenditure,” argued the council. Following the verdict, the education department had issued a statement in which private schools that had increased their tuition fees by more than 5 percent per year had been asked to return the extra amount to parents or student’s guardians.
