Sir: Sexual harassment and abuse is more common than one could ever imagine. For most of the time, the survivor fails to identify an incident as harassment, and even in more of the instances the suffering remains unsaid and unheard. On Monday a girl and a 13-year-old boy were raped in different areas of Rahim Yar Khan. According to a report, the girl was a resident of Basti Ghaus Pur and was abducted by Shahzad and Imran, while she was returning home from a function. The suspects then allegedly took the victim to nearby fields where they sexually assaulted her. Meanwhile, the boy belonged to Zaffarabad and was abducted by Irfan and a few of his accomplices, who took him to an undisclosed location where the suspects allegedly abused him sexually. Sexual abuse at any age or under any circumstances can be only dealt with taking extreme action against its perpetrators and understanding and compassion for the victims of such crimes. In order to eradicate cases of child rape from Pakistan, the concerned authorities should make sex education mandatory in educational institutes. Moreover, parents should also be made aware of the post traumatic symptoms of such incidents, and they should be taught how to deal with talking to young children about such serious matters.
