Attorney General of Pakistan (AGP) Anwar Mansoor on Tuesday informed the Supreme Court of Pakistan (SCP) that consultations were underway with the authorities concerned to have former finance minister Ishaq Dar repatriated to the country. As the three-member bench of the Supreme Court headed by Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar resumed hearing in the case pertaining to Dar’s return, the AGP told the court that Dar’s passports had been cancelled and he had been blacklisted on the request of the National Accountability Bureau’s (NAB). When the CJP asked how will the former finance minister return to the country if he did not have any legal documents for the purpose, the AGP said, “There is a system in place for such cases.” The AGP also told the bench that even though Pakistan had an extradition treaty with the United Kingdom, the matter needed to be raised with the courts over there. During the hearing, the NAB prosecutor general informed the court that the bureau had gathered details of several of Dar’s properties and it would submit the records in the court after an inquiry. The hearing was adjourned till next week. The former finance minister is accused of possessing assets beyond his declared sources of income. A reference was filed against him by the NAB in light of the Supreme Court’s July 28 verdict in the Panama Papers case. Published in Daily Times, September 12th 2018.
