Sir: it augurs well that only about 40 protesters turned up to attend a white supremacist rally near White House on August 12, 2018. It was a clear message to hate monger, Jason Kessler, organizer of last year’s violent and deadly ‘Unite the Right’ rally at Charlottesville (USA). On the other hand, there were thousands of counter-protesters who filled the seven-acre park chanting slogans like “No Trump! No KKK! No fascist USA!” “Black lives matter!” and “Go home, Nazis!”(Germany has lifted ban on using Swastika). A pro-Khalistan rally was planned by Sikhs in London. Modi’s government fought tooth and nail to forestall it. Disgusted at Britain’s permission to hold the rally, Modi then staged a counter rally the same day to drown out the message of Sikh persecution within the noise. Minorities in India are fearful at the ascendancy and methodology of the Hindutva ideology (Hindustan only for Hindus). The minorities (Muslims, Dalits, tribal people and Christians, and even Bengali settlers in Assam) are persecuted on flimsy grounds (beef eating, touching a cow, being bearded, visiting a Brahmin temple, so on). Many media outlets in the country have also started to publish dedicated issues on the plight of minorities in recent years. Avowedly secular India and Israel are two countries that are tied up in multi-faceted strategic cooperation to create a single nation. The world should take notice of the persecution of minorities in the two countries. MARYUM MALIK Islamabad Published in Daily Times, August 14th 2018.
