Election Tribunal allows Abbasi to contest elections from NA-53

Published on: June 26, 2018 1:14 PM

ISLAMABAD: The Election Tribunal on Tuesday allowed former Prime Minister (PM) Shahid Khaqan Abbasi to contest polls from NA-53 Islamabad-II constituency.

Previously, the returning officer had rejected his nomination papers on June 19, citing that Abbasi did not provide complete information in the affidavit attached with the nomination papers.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf chief Imran Khan and Ayesha Gulalai’s nomination papers were also rejected from the constituency on the similar reason.

However, today after hearing the petition, Justice Moshin Akhtar Kayani overruled the returning officer’s verdict for Khaqan Abbasi.

While speaking to media outside the Islamabad High Court (IHC), the former PM condemned the arrest of PML-N’s nominee from NA-59 Qamarul Islam Raja.

Abbasi remarked that the arrest of Raja is unfortunate, moreover, he requested NAB to release him immediately.

On Monday, the PML-N’s candidate, who is contesting against party’s disgruntled leader Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan from Rawalpindi’s NA-59 constituency, was arrested in Saaf Pani case.

PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif condemned the arrest of the party member.
