HRCP (Human Rights Council of Pakistan), announced a campaign to raise awareness about the water crisis in Tharparkar on Saturday.
Through the awareness campaign HRCP aims to improve the life of people in Tharparkar by providing them with potable water. HRCP formally launched this campaign in order to raise awareness about the water crisis in Thar and to raise funds for charity.
The main purpose of the campaign is to spread awareness among masses regarding the current situation of the people living in Tharparkar and the problems they face due to a chronic shortage of drinking water.
The scarcity of potable water is a huge problem at Tharparkar. It affects over 400,000 people on an average in each Tehseel of Tharparkar. The water shortage is so dire that only two glasses of drinking water are available for each person per day and most sources of water are contaminated.
The government had previously installed 1400 Reverse Osmosis (RO) plants out of which 80% stopped working within a month of installation. Presently, most of RO pumps are either dysfunctional or not working at their full capacity.
Residents of Thar have to travel 10 – 30 KM on average to get water. Approximately 25-35 percent of Thar’s population has to travel for over 48 hours in to obtain water.
