KARACHI: Mayor Karachi, Waseem Akhtar has constituted 21-member governing body to streamline the health services and education facilities of Karachi Medical and Dental College (KMDC), being run under Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC). This body has been formed after a gap of seven years. In 2006, a proposal had been introduced that half of Body’s members should be ‘stand retired’ after serving four years like system in Senate of Pakistan. A notification duly signed by Jamil Farooqi, senior Director Human Resources Management KMC has been issued in this effect. The members of same governing body has also been empowered to look into financial, administrative and other matters of Abbasi Shaheed Hospital (ASH) in order to bring betterment in the overall services and administration of ASH. Both institutions have been functioning badly since long due to administrative corruption and failure for providing respective services to patients and students. The Committee will look into the abnormalities in these institutions for taking corrective measures in this regard. Services, standard and administration would be put straight to turn the function of these two institutions viable for benefit of the beneficiaries. The Committee would take into account the possibility for a joint venture under Private Public Partnership for rehabilitation of ASH affairs. The daily attendance of ASH staff would also be shifted to bio-metric system in order to ensure the proper timings. Administrative officials would also be appointed to ensure working coordination among the medical, paramedics and other staff of ASH besides putting right persons on merit. Rehabilitation and strengthening of clinical, laboratory, radiology department, ECG department, operation theater, X-ray, dental, Out Patient Department, consultants offices, emergency, blood bank and other departments is also being considered. Functioning of teaching and administrative matters at KMDC would also be taken into account in order to make the institution fit for catering better health education. ASH is housing 584 medical staff and more than 1,514 officials with an annual expenditure of Rs 1.10 billion. Around 136 CPS, 350 house Job medical officers, 100 Midwives, 125 nurses on scholarship are also on the roll. Total outlay for fiscal year 2016-17 allocated comes around Rs 2.71 billion. Sarfaraz Rafiqui Shaheed Hospital, Spenser Eye Hospital, Primary Health Care Centre Lyari, Homeopathic Hospital, Shobraj Maternity Hospital, Gaderabad General Hospital, Gizri Maternity Home, Landhi Medical Complex, Cardio Emergency Centre Shah Faisal, Cardio Emergency Centre Landhi, Karachi Institute of Heart Disease and Leprosy Hospital are being run under KMC. Committee comprises Principal KMDC Ms. Nargis Anjum, Financial Adviser, Khalid Mehmood Shaikh, senior Director of Medical and Health Services, Muhammad Ali Abbasi, member Sindh Assembly Jamal Ahmed, Professor Jalal Akbar of Baqai University, Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s President Shamim Ahmed Ferpo, Rehan Hashmi, Chairman DMC Central, Nadeem Hashmi, Khurrum Farhan and Khurram Nizam, City Council members of KMC, Prof Farhat Jaffery, Prof. Naveed Rasheed, Dr. Nighat Shakeel, Dr. Zeenat Ayub KIMS, Mansoor ul Aziz, Iqbal Adamjee and Sardar Yaseen Malik are members of the Committee.
