Sir: After Benazir Income Support Program (BISP) the introduction of the Union Council Poverty Reduction Program (UCPRP) by the Sindh government is another milestone. It will work for the benefit of the poorest rural women in Khairpur, Sanghar, Mirpurkhas, Thatta, Badin and Umerkot. The UCBPRP is working under the Sindh Rural Support Organisation (SRSO), setup by the Sindh government with a total budget of Rs 5 billion. Its initiatives include provision of financial assistance and vocational training. It has helped 30,708 women stand on their own two feet so far. The program was initiated in 2009, starting from two districts; Kashmore Kandkhot and Shikarpur. Its aim was to improve the living standards of the areas’ poorest women by helping them generate income to purchase livestock, giving small loans, and provision of vocational training. PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari is completely behind the project, as he is committed to the cause of womens’ empowerment. The women from the districts in which the project is active have already shown keen interest in bettering their situations through the project. The project was possible because of the vision of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto. She wanted to empower rural women so they could become empowered and respected members of society. This is another success story for the PPP. Hopefully it will soon be active in all of Sindh. HUMEIRA ALWANI Thatta Published in Daily Times, May 15th 2018.
