NAUNDERO: Over 40 gamblers were arrested on Tuesday by a strong contingent of police in Tarai village near Madeji, a town in the district of Shikarpur.
The alleged gamblers were engaged in cockfighting, a blood sport between two cocks. The police recovered a huge amount of cash, confiscated two cars and ten motorcycles.
According to a report, the Shikarpur senior superintendent of police (SSP) Masood Bangash ordered a heavy contingent of police force to conduct a surprise raid at Tarai village, which is a famous place for cockfighting. Gamblers of districts including Shikarpur, Larkana, Kashmore, Kandhkot, Shahdadkot, Khairpur Mir and Moro arrive at the village to gamble. The police arrested about 40 alleged gamblers including Nasim Khakhrani, Inam Golo, Rahim Bux Umrani, Muhammad Ali Shaikh, Ilyas Mirani, Tariq Magsi, Ali Sher Mirani, Hamid Kariro, Ghous Bux and others.
Meanwhile, Madeji police had registered a case against them. Meanwhile, the SSP Bangash said that the police achieved a remarkable success against crimes. He pledged to continue crackdown against criminals in the region.
The villagers appreciated the SSP for taking a stern action against cockfighting.
The villagers alleged that the local police had been receiving bribe from the organisers of the cockfighting. They demanded comprehensive investigation into the matter to identify the facilitators including police officers.
