KARACHI: The Sindh Local Government (LG) Department has encroached upon four wings of the Engineering Department of the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC), said representatives of KMC Officers Association (KMCOA) on Friday.

Nayyab Saeed, an account officer of the LG Department (Project Directorate) and a serving employee of the Sindh United Gazette Officers, has been posted at the KMC Engineering Department, Niaz Soomro, project director of LGD Directorate has confirmed this development.

Talking to Daily Times, Nayyab said he had been appointed at the KMC’s Engineering Department by higher provincial authorities. “During my stay here I will look after all economic and administrative activities, including tender enquiries, transfers and postings of officials and Annual Development Programme of KMC, besides district development projects,” he claimed.

“The Karachi mayor cannot take any action against me as I have been deputed by the Sindh government high-ups,” he said, adding: “I advise the KMC officials to work with me cordially for the betterment of Karachi, and also request the mayor to coordinate with me in this respect.”

He added, “In case the KMC doesn’t coordinate with me, I will ask officials of KDA’s department concerned to work with me.”

He said that vacant posts at the KMC, including those of four chief engineers, would be filled soon and the KDA’s engineering force would also be inducted in mega development projects.

Meanwhile, KMC Technical Services Director General Shahab Anwer told Daily Times that civil, building, electrical and mechanical and road and bridges departments had been functioning without any head. “Several officials at the KMC Engineering Department are also working without having any assignment,” he said.

Earlier, the Sindh LG Department had appointed former KMC Works and Service Department director general Niaz Soomro as the project director to supervise mega development projects worth Rs 10 billion in the port city.
