LAHORE: Treasury and the opposition benches in Punjab Assembly on Friday unanimously passed a resolution against Indian government for allegedly harassing Pakistani diplomats. The resolution was moved by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)-backed Opposition Leader in the House Mian Mehmoodur Rasheed. Initially, the opposition leader on a point of order urged the speaker to take up the resolution out of turn and the speaker with the consent of the ruling party’s minister allowed the amended resolution. Anyhow, in the resolution it was stated that Pakistani diplomats in India were being continuously harassed in violation of international diplomatic manners and protocols. The resolution said that such incidents were forcing Pakistan to review its relations with India by calling back its diplomats. The resolution also condemned the Indian government’s anti-Pakistan motions. The resolution demanded the federal government to highlight the matter before the international organizations and global powers to play their role in this regard. On Thursday, Pakistan recalled its high commissioner to India following a string of ‘harassment’ incidents with the diplomats in New Delhi. Speaking at a weekly press briefing, Foreign office Spokesperson Dr Faisal said Sohail Mahmood had been summoned for consultations over the recent incidents of harassment of the embassy staff. He said the government had also registered protest with the Indian High Commission in Islamabad as well as the External Affairs Ministry in New Delhi against incidents as well as lack of efforts by the Indian government on this account. Indian Deputy High Commissioner JP Singh was summoned to the Foreign Office to lodge a protest on the ‘maltreatment being meted out to the officials and families of the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi’.
